Most software problems in a small business are not really technical. They are that nobody has ever written down how the work is actually done, so every system bought to help ends up modelling somebody else's company.

What you get by hiring one person

The person who sits with your process is the person who writes the code and the person who answers when something breaks two years later. Nothing is lost in a handover, because there is no handover. Nothing is subcontracted to someone you have not met.

The cost of that is capacity: only so much work can run at once, and sometimes the honest answer is that the timeline you need is not one that can be committed to. You will be told that up front rather than discovering it in month three.

How the work is built

Written scope before code. Working software you can use early rather than a demo at the end. Documentation aimed at the next developer, whoever that turns out to be — the systems here are still maintained years after launch precisely because they were written to be picked back up.

Where a client's data is involved, it stays the client's. Nothing gets published, shown in a portfolio, or fed to a third-party service because it was convenient.
